Grab it while you can, and if you are organized, rested and stretched, don't forget this is a generative, creative  week. Keep a notebook for your thoughts, ideas, questions, epiphanies and stray bits of advice (even overheard).  If you are hearing voices, or getting visions, write them down.  And if you are looking for something to do, try some free writing on your goals for the week, for the program, and then write: "Now I know"... finish the sentence (without thinking about it!) and keep going!

Here's the Thing: capturing the play on the page
Play scripts are blueprints for productions. As playwrights we offer instructions for telling a story in four dimensions and building a living world. Contemporary playwrights have carte blanche to use the blank page to communicate with actors, directors, and designers. We can provide opportunities visually within the dialogue on the page for realizing a creation. In this workshop we will play with ways of creating a visual map, an aural score, or emotional conditions using punctuation, line lengths, white space, and unique placement of words on the page. We’ll look at examples of contained, joyful, and groundbreaking use of the page from David Harrower, Chay Yew, and Sarah Kane, respectively, and we will experiment with a core element in each.

Nuts and Bolts: The Shape of Memoir
If you have started your memoir, or are thinking about it, you might already have discovered the vast difference between your life, and your life on the page. And since your life is unfinished, and may seem unwieldy, uncertain or unimportant, how can it be the source of a compelling and satisfying book? In this 90 minute workshop, we will talk about how to turn life into art. Through discussion and exercises we will address questions like, “Where do I begin? What do I include? Why would anyone else care? What is my point? How do I get rid of all this boring stuff that happened in the middle? Or choose between all the stuff that repeats? What is a memoir anyway?” (1.5 hours)

Nuts and Bolts: The Rules of the Game: Different Stories, Different Structures
Story structure is an amazing thing. It provides the scaffolding on which we build an entire narrative. After all, every story has three things—a beginning, a middle, and an end. Or do they? Here in the US, the answer is an unequivocal "yes." But stories are told differently around the world— and yet achieve similar goals of enchanting an audience and of sharing the human experience. In this class we will discuss a variety of traditional story structures from several cultures. We will dive into some writing exercises to see how the structural choices might change the stories we tell. We will also discuss hybridizing structure to flavor our work or make points that might otherwise be lost in translation. Bring your own cultural traditions to the table. Let's discover what's inherent in our work that we might not have noticed before. Come prepared to listen, to write, and to share. This course is suitable for all genres.

Genre Intensive: Creative Nonfiction
Nonfiction Intensive, with faculty member Rahna Reiko Rizzuto. In this workshop, we will be exploring ways to deepen our writing, follow the clues and suggestions our subconscious is leaving on the page, and figure out where we might go next.  Part discussion, part revision, part group work, our nonfiction intensive will give you some tools and tricks to help you break open your writing, then see how it might be “re-envisioned.”  I am inviting submissions of up to three pages (double spaced), but this time, I want your problem children, which means something you want to improve and just haven’t been able to figure out how to fix, along with three questions you have about the submission and what isn’t working (on a separate paper or on the back of the last page). I will use a few of these in class to illustrate what we are doing, and will use all of them to set our workshop frame. Everyone is welcome to join us. You do not have to be writing nonfiction to attend. However, all participants please bring paper and a writing implement, and a problem child of your own (appropriate for sharing), with three questions/problems you are having with it.  Submission folder deadlines and location will be announced at opening session. Start thinking about what you want to work on now! (3 hours)

  • NOTE If you are planning to come to this workshop, but did not submit (which is fine, and you are welcome!) please bring a page of your own writing, a “problem child” so you can work on it in the end of the workshop (no sharing necessary). If you are planning to go to Sherri’s fiction workshop that overlaps the second half of the CNF Intensive, you are welcome to join us for the first part and slip out when you need to.

1:15pm EST

Genre Intensive: Poetry and Hybrid Forms
In the first part of this intensive, Bea will talk about the craft of poetry, focusing on one or two poets, as examples with an emphasis on building impact to the whole. The second part of the workshop will engage in re-visiting issues in student work and beginning revision in light of the methods discussed from the craft samples. We will write towards the next version in the workshop and will end by reading from our next versions and discussing the changes made together. Please submit no more than three poems, no longer than 2 pages each, that you feel need opening up or re-structuring in some way and bring copies of the same work to the workshop. Although you need not submit in order to attend the session, you must bring a poem with you that you would like to work on. The submission guidelines will be announced again at the Opening Session. Nuts and Bolts: Roadmap for Finishing Your Novel or How to Outline without Freaking Out
I am a Planner. I love outlines. To me, they are handy guides, good listeners, and perfect for experimentation, and yet, so many writers balk at the idea. This type of writer is called a Pantser—named for the seat by which they fly. To Pantsers, outlines are strict authoritarians, roadblocks to creativity, and absolutely, positively not into the idea of Change. But here's a secret: fear of outlining is the first sign of the Evil Internal Editor saying, "You can't do this!" Writing a novel can be a wonderful experience, or a frightening one, depending on how well you have prepared. Outlines are a big part of that preparation. In this workshop you’ll begin to develop your own personal guidebook to get you through the process from start to finish. We’ll do exercises to help you focus your concept and start drafting a “map” for your project. We’ll also discuss how to tackle each day’s journey to help you get to “the end,” and what to do next. Be prepared to think and write! Suitable for fiction, non-fiction and graphic novel and dramatic writing. Poets welcome, too!

Take Ten
Heads up playwrights and screenwriters! Want a staged reading of your work in front of an enthusiastic audience? TAKE TEN is the perfect opportunity for you to hear your 10 minute play. Performed by your fellow writers with minimal rehearsal and no acting skill required, the event is an opportunity for dramatic writers to hear their work and other writers to join in the process. Submissions are limited to ten minutes (8-12 pages). Six of the submissions will be chosen for the readings. If your piece is selected, it's YOUR responsibility to choose actors and organize rehearsals. The deadline for submission will be early in the residency, so come prepared with pages to submit. Everyone is invited to attend what is always one of the highlights of the residency. (1.5 hours evening performance.) Check the bulletin board for submission deadline. Please submit 2 copies of your play in the envelope on the bulletin board.

Every one of our muscles, bones and ligament contains the history of our lives, told in scars, tension, and sense memory. In this gentle, generative session we will do a 10-minute meditation to discover the stories held within our own bodies, and spend time writing what we learn. We will follow with a second meditation to speak to our inner selves and ask for guidance in our work. Come to class in comfortable cloths. In this intensive dramatic writing workshop, students will bring pages from their work. Whether it be an excerpt from a film, a play, a television script, or even a treatment, we will explore what is essential to the story you are telling and what is not. In the first hour of the workshop, all work will be read aloud and brief notes given. The students will then go away for the second hour and rewrite their pages using some of the notes they received. In the final hour we will once again meet and review the rewrites.
